Early Childhood Care and Education  Level 6 
This course aims to equip supervisors with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and theoretical underpinnings to work effectively with staff, young children and their families.
The course also aims to impact positively on the daily experiences of young children and adults in early childhood care and education settings.
To meet the needs of an expanding ECCE sector we aim to provide a solid, integrated, unified approach to the delivery of ECCE training. KCFE childcare courses have been developed to meet the needs of adults responsible for children and we provide excellent tuition in modern childcare.

Learners will be able to:

Demonstrate a broad range of knowledge relating to Childcare and to the health and well-being of children in a variety of Childcare settings.
Demonstrate knowledge of a range of theories, practice guidelines and legal requirements pertaining to the Childcare sector.
Evaluate and use information to plan, develop and implement appropriate Childcare strategies in a variety of Childcare settings whilst working under specific direction and supervision within a support capacity.

Apply knowledge and skills within a range of varied and specific Childcare contexts in accordance with accepted guidelines and practice and legal requirements.
Take responsibility for own learning in a structured context.
Reflect on personal practice to inform self understanding and personal development.

To access programmes leading to this award the learner should have reached the standards
of knowledge, skill and competence associated with the preceding level of the
National Framework of Qualifications.
This may have been achieved through a formal qualification in Early Childhood Care and Education 5M2009 QQI/FETAC Level 5
Achievement of these components will enable the learner to progress to other appropriate programmes leading to awards at the next or higher levels of the National Framework of Qualifications.
This qualification is suitable primarily for:
  • those who are already working in as a team/room leader or in a supervisory capacity in a childcare setting
  • those who are hoping to progress to a team/room leader role
  • those who have completed Level 5 are wish to up-skill

Childcare is now part of Irish society and there has been growing interest in quality childcare at local, national, European and international level.

The quality of staff entering the childcare profession is critical to the establishment of standards that we can be comfortable with. The Childcare Act (1991) laid the foundations for childcare as it has developed in Ireland.
The Act made the Health Services Executive responsible for monitoring the standards of care in nurseries, crèches and pre-school groups. In 1997 Regulations published under the Act provided that two ‘competent adults’ must be present in a room with no more than 20 children.
“An Ireland where children are respected as young citizens with a valued contribution to make and a voice of their own, where all children are cherished and supported by family and the wider society; where they enjoy a fulfilling childhood and realise their potential”   (National Children’s Strategy, 2000)
Professional childcare practitioners should have an understanding of child development and learning principles along with the ability to create safe and caring learning environments. A well trained practitioner will have a good understanding of curricular principles and practices and recognise the importance of informal learning through play.
In addition to these skills the childcare practitioner should have skills in administration and record keeping along with the ability to work with and actively involve parents and guardians in practice.
These hallmarks of quality identified by the Forum on Early Childhood Education 2 are mirrored in our training programmes through quality work experience, quality training and expert teaching in child development and professional practice.
“A competent adult is a person who has appropriate experience in caring for children under six years of age and/or has an appropriate qualification in childcare and is a suitable person to care for children.”

The grading of the QQI/FETAC award is as follows:

Pass   - 50-64%          Merit   -   65-79%         Distinction  -  80-100%

The grade achieved will be determined by the grades achieved on the components
Single Component: €300     
These prices do not include QQI/FETAC Certification Fees
All participants are required to be Garda Vetted and take part in suitable work experience during the programme.
It is the responsibility of the learners to secure an appropriate work experience placement.
Please note: KCFE can NOT insure candidates while attending work experience.

All training is delivered in a friendly and comfortable training centre with experienced and dedicated tutors focusing on ensuring each trainee is given every opportunity to learn the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities in order to excel in their childcare role.
