Child Development 5N1764 QQI/FETAC Level 5

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence relevant to the theory and practice of child development and learning within early childhood care and education settings (ECCE)
 
Who should apply:
  Anyone interested in working with Children or in the Childcare environment.
 

Learners will be able to: 

 

1. Explain the holistic development of the child to include physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional, moral, spiritual, creative and  cultural development

 

2. Describe a range of theories of child development and learning to include Piaget, Chomsky, Erikson, Bowlby, Ainsworth, Pavlov, Skinner

 

3. Describe the influence of family, social, cultural and environmental factors on child development and learning

 

4. Identify the benefits of play to the child’s holistic development and learning mindful of diversity, inclusion and equality of opportunity

 

5. Describe the contribution of the practitioner/parent/guardian to the development and learning of children in the home and in the ECCE setting

 

6. Apply theoretical principles of child development in the ECCE setting

 

7. Document children’s developmental progress against normative milestones of development

 

8. Carry out observations in support of programme planning for individual children and groups

 

9. Recommend suitable play activities to promote holistic development and learning

 

10. Evaluate own role and practice in supporting the development and learning of the child

 

 

 

Assessment Technique:     

Assignment  30%    Collection of Work   40%       Exam   30%

The grading of the QQI/FETAC component is as follows:
 
Pass  -   50-64%         Merit    -  65-79%         Distinction -  80-100%

All participants are required to be Garda Vetted and take part in suitable work experience during the programme.
 
It is the responsibility of the learners to secure an appropriate work experience placement.
 
Please note: KCFE can NOT insure candidates while attending work experience.

  

Career Options:

Students obtaining certification in Childcare may progress to further studies at selected third level colleges under the Higher Education Links Scheme.

Other options include entering direct employment within the childcare profession as:

• Crèche/Nursery Worker

• Professional Child-minder

• Au Pair

• Pre-school Teacher

• Special Needs Assistant (SNA)

• Primary School Classroom Assistant

Component Certification:
Following successful completion Kilmuckridge Centre of Further Education will offer a QQI/ FETAC Level 5 component in Child Development (5N1764) which is a Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications.
 
 
Learner Progression
Child Development (5N1764) is a component of
Early Childhood Care and Education 5M2009 QQI/FETAC Level 5

Learners who successfully complete this programme may use the associated credits as a stand-alone qualification or as one component of a Major Award, with a view to continue onto further education into Early Childhood Care and Education 6M2007 QQI/FETAC Level 6
